Who can install my Spark fireplace?

A gas fireplace installer or licensed HVAC contractor with similar experience is required for installation. Failure to use a certified professional may void the warranty.  If you are having trouble, we do have resources to help- please call us at 866-938-3846.

What is the difference between a vent free unit and direct vent unit?

Vent free does not require a flue while direct vent has a flue that must vent outside through a wall or the roof. Direct vent units have a fixed glass panel, while vent free prohibits a glass front.

How safe is a vent free fireplace?

Extremely safe. Vent free appliances have been sold in the USA since the 1960s and have had an exceptional safety record! In fact, vent free fireplaces represent the fastest growing segment of the fireplace industry due to flexibility in installation. Each product must comply with stringent National Safety Standard called ANSI Z21.11.2b. Please visit www.ventfree.org for more information.

What is the return policy?

We will accept returns made within 3 months of the ship date. Products can be returned for a full refund provided the product has not been used or installed, and is received by us in saleable condition. The customer is responsible for arranging and paying all return shipping costs directly with the transportation company. Please contact one of our representatives at 866-938-3846 for a Return Authorization number. Once the unit is received by our warehouse, a technician will determine it’s condition. PLEASE NOTE: Liners for Linear Burners are custom pieces and CANNOT be returned.

Can a flat screen TV be installed above your fireplace?

Yes, however you should check with the TV manufacturer and/or store you purchased the TV from. We recommend you place the TV at least 24” above the top of the opening of the fireplace and most importantly, recessing the front of the wall above the fireplace so recessing the TV into the wall will move it out of the path of the heat.

Can any of your products be used outdoor?

Yes, the Linear Burner System Outdoor can be used in any outdoor environment. All of our other products are approved for indoor use only.

What if my unit needs repair?

In the unlikely event one of our units needs repair, please contact us first at 866-938-3846. Our technician can diagnose most problems and recommend and appropriate solution. If the product needs an onsite technician, we will pay reasonable cost associated with fixing the fireplace during the 2-year warranty period.

Where do I get the surround?

We currently do not sell surrounds. They are a design element specified by an architect or designer. We can make some recommendations to suppliers we have used.

Can I bring the surround material to the edge of the firebox?

Yes, SMF direct vent and vent free units are designed to have noncombustible surround material come to the opening of the firebox. This maximizes the unique rectangular shape.

Can I replace my fake log set?

You have several options. Our Linear Burner System easily works as a retrofit system. Most people would use the smaller LBS to fit into their existing masonry fireplace. Some customers opt to remove their existing fireplace and go with a direct vent or vent free.

Are your fireplaces energy efficient?

Yes, between 80-95% depending on the model.

What types of fuel can be used with your product?

Our products are designed and certified to run off propane or natural gas. We will need this information when you place your order.

Can I remove the glass from the direct vent Fire Ribbon?

The glass can be removed for cleaning purposes, but must be firmly in place when the unit is in operation.

Why do some pictures show an air grille on the vent free?

An air vent is a requirement of all vent free fireplaces. There are different techniques to conceal an air path underneath the surround if desired. Please see our specification sheet  for more details on the air vent.

I’m having trouble with my remote, what do I do?

Please see our troubleshooting page for the remote.

Can I use my own universal remote?

Yes, as long as it is a millivolt system. What is the maximum distance from the fireplace to the wall switch? 10 feet Is electricity required for my unit? A 110v is necessary for the fan in our direct vent products. Vent free has no electric requirement. Is electricity required for the electronic ignition? There is a transformer which should be plugged into a 110v outlet.

What should my flame look like?

Your Spark flame should be blue at the bottom with a yellow, active flame above it. There should not be any dark orange in the flame, nor any sooting. Flame height will vary from installation to installation, but the range should be 4-6 inches. Please view the video on our website to see what the flame should look like.
